How many 19L bottles do you need for a wedding or event?

Short answer

Multiply guests by about 750 ml (three glasses), add 25 percent for hot weather and refills, and divide by 19 litres. For 150 guests that is 8 bottles. Order a little extra rather than run short mid-event.

The formula

Guests × litres per guest × 1.25 ÷ 19 = bottles. Three glasses of 250 ml is 0.75 litres per guest, which is a sensible planning figure for a few hours. The 1.25 adds a quarter on top for refills, spills and heat. Round up to a whole bottle.

If the event is outdoors, in summer or runs all day, plan four glasses (1 litre) per guest instead. For 150 guests that becomes about 10 bottles.

Things that change the number

  • Meal served. Biryani and other heavy food make guests drink more.
  • Duration. A two-hour function and an all-day event are very different.
  • Other drinks. Soft drinks and tea reduce plain water use, but do not cut your estimate by much.
  • Cooking. If the caterer uses your bottles for cooking, count that separately and tell us.
