Delivered 19L water or a home RO filter: which makes sense?

Short answer

Neither option wins every time. A home RO filter suits a household with steady water supply that is happy to maintain equipment. Delivered 19L water suits people who want no equipment, no servicing and a predictable monthly bill. Work out both costs over a year before you decide.

How the two compare

Delivered 19L water compared with a home RO filter
Delivered 19L waterHome RO filter
Upfront costRefundable deposit, plus a dispenser if you do not have onePurchase and installation of the unit
Running costBottles at your plan rateFilter and membrane replacement, electricity, servicing
UpkeepNone on your side apart from keeping the dispenser cleanYou or a technician must service it on schedule
Water supplyNot needed. Bottles arrive fullNeeds a steady water source and usually power
Waste waterNone at your homeRO units normally send part of the incoming water to drain
SpaceRoom for a bottle or two and a dispenserA unit under the sink or on the wall
Where it can go wrongA late delivery if you let stock run outOverdue filter changes, which affect the water

Work out the yearly cost of delivered water

At 12 bottles a month, regular supply at Rs 195 is Rs 2,340 a month, or Rs 28,080 a year. On the monthly advance plan at Rs 177 it is Rs 2,124 a month, or Rs 25,488 a year. These figures leave out the refundable deposit.

For a home RO filter, add the unit price, installation, the yearly cost of replacement filters and membranes, electricity, and any servicing visits. Divide by the years you expect to use it. Ask the seller for the real filter replacement schedule and price, because that is the cost people forget.

When delivered water makes more sense

  • You rent, or may move soon, and do not want to leave equipment behind
  • Your building has irregular supply or low pressure
  • You want one predictable bill and no servicing calls
  • You use a modest number of bottles a week

When a home filter can make sense

  • You own the home and plan to stay for years
  • You have steady supply and pressure
  • Your use is high enough that the unit pays for itself
  • You are disciplined about changing filters on time

One more check: what is actually in the water

Whichever route you take, ask for numbers. We print the composition in ppm on every bottle and publish it on the our water page. For a home filter, ask the seller what TDS the output water should have. What TDS tells you.
